In what is being widely reported as an “active shooter,” Charleston SWAT and bomb squad are responding to a scene at Virginia’s restaurant on King Street.
There is nothing to indicate that the suspect is actively shooting people, it’s not clear why it’s still being reported as an active shooter besides Charleston PD’s initial tweet which said:
“King btwn Calhoun & Morris blocked to motorist & pedestrian traffic active shooter in 400 block of King people to avoid the area.”
Witnesses said that people were eating at the Virginia’s On King restaurant when a man in his 50s came in with a small revolver, locked the door, and declared, “I am the new king of Charleston,” according to Post and Courier.
SWAT and the bomb squad were called to the scene, and one helpful reporter tweeted out a SWAT sniper’s exact position with photo.
King Street has been shut down between Calhoun and Morris Streets.
It’s not known at this time how many people may be hostage or if anybody has been shot.
UPDATE: Associated Press is reported that this is a disgruntled restaurant employee who has shot one person and taken hostages. The person who was shot has been extricated and transported to a local hospital. Hostage negotiators are on scene.
